What do cannabis competitions judge?
Cannabis competitions use different judging systems. Some categories assess sensory qualities and judges’ experiences; others use laboratory results, while some events invite consumer scoring. An award needs its year, category, submitted sample and judging method to make sense. This guide compares four international competition series and a Phuket example, explaining how to read their results in context. Before asking who won, ask what was being judged
A cultivar name beside a trophy can look like a complete answer. The competition record contains several more: an edition, a place, a category, an entrant and a judging method. A flower recognized for sensory qualities need not win a chemical-concentration award. A winner in one market is not automatically a winner everywhere. Reading those details reveals a richer history than a list of expensive names.
There is no single verified registry here from which to calculate every local competition, edition and category worldwide. Rather than inventing a fixed count, this article examines four documented series: High Times Cannabis Cup, Emerald Cup, Spannabis Champions Cup and IC420. A Phuket example then brings the discussion to Thailand. These are case studies of different systems, not a declaration that only four important competitions exist.
Amsterdam: tasting becomes a public institution
High Times’ 2025 retrospective dates the first annual event to November 1988 in Amsterdam, identifying Skunk #1 under Cultivator’s Choice as the winner. It also acknowledges recollections of a private tasting in 1987. The precise phrasing is therefore that the organizer counts its annual competition from 1988. That is stronger history than presenting one date as an uncontested answer to the first cannabis contest anywhere. High Times · history of the Cannabis Cup (2025)
A public competition turns private preferences into named categories and a record others can discuss. Producers, shops and cultivar names travel with the news of an award. The result can recognize craft and build a market at the same time. A useful history leaves both roles visible: commercial consequences do not erase cultural significance, while cultural significance does not turn publicity into a scientific standard.
People’s Choice: judging distributed through a market
Cannabis Cup’s FAQ describes a model in which participants obtain sample kits and use codes to submit scores online. Assessment includes appearance, aroma, flavour and experienced effects as appropriate to the product. Numbers and requirements vary between editions. The general FAQ explains the model; the edition’s own documentation determines its particular scope. Cannabis Cup · judging FAQ
Montana 2026 provides a concrete edition: the event page lists judging from 11 July to 22 August and the awards event on 5 September in Billings. Distributing kits through participating retailers differs from convening one panel in one room. It can gather varied consumer perspectives, while interpretation still needs to account for differing experiences and conditions. This is a distinction between designs, not evidence that one particular score was invalid. Cannabis Cup · Montana 2026 event
Emerald Cup: a stage for growers and their harvest
The Emerald Cup organizer’s 2023 announcement dates the event to 2004 and locates its roots in the Emerald Triangle’s grower community. It emphasizes cultivation, quality and agriculture. The event’s meaning therefore extends beyond a winning flower to recognition for the people behind it. Attendance or entry figures in an edition’s announcement belong to that edition, not to an assumed permanent scale. Emerald Cup · organizer announcement (2023)
SC Labs described the 2021 system as analysing and grouping flower by terpene profiles before supplying anonymized samples to judges. Chemistry was used to organize comparisons; that does not establish therapeutic effects for an aroma group. Removing brand names limits one source of information available to judges. It does not remove personal preference or transform sensory judging into a clinical experiment. SC Labs · Emerald Cup judging system (2021)
Spannabis: one event name, changing rules
Spannabis Champions Cup should be distinguished from the accompanying trade fair and conference. The 2026 World Cannabis Conferences programme places the Cup ceremony in Bilbao on 17 April. Identifying the location and edition prevents a future-event promotional page from being mistaken for evidence of a completed competition. World Cannabis Conferences · Bilbao 2026 programme
The rules published for 2020 proposed laboratory-based ranking without sensory judges. Announced 2027 rules describe judges assessing aroma, flavour and appearance alongside separate analytical awards. These documents demonstrate that systems can change. The 2020 plan alone does not establish that the event occurred, and the future 2027 rules cannot be applied retrospectively to the 2026 results. IC420: a community competition distinguishes its entrants
The organizer’s IC420 2025 thread announced Barcelona dates of 14–20 April, blind judging and subsequent publication of scores. Categories included breeder and grower divisions, club flowers and other product types. A competition can therefore separate entrants by their role as well as by the material submitted. That distinction changes which comparisons a result represents. ICMag · organizer’s IC420 2025 announcement
The organizer clarified grower as an entrant without a company or brand connection, with seed sellers or brand-associated entrants placed in breeder divisions. “Breeder” in that table is an eligibility classification, not proof that every entrant originated the genetics. The records reviewed here do not settle a precise founding date for the competition. ICMag · organizer clarification of entrant categories
Documented results: retain the edition and category
High Times’ results published on 11 September 2026 list Wild Sky Farms / Purple Push Pop first in Hybrid and Funk Farm / Ancient Blue Dream first in Sativa. These are Montana-edition awards, not world titles. A listed entrant is also not automatically the original genetic breeder. High Times · Montana 2026 winners
Spannabis’ 2026 results distinguish five main categories from special analytical awards. Selva Club / Lemon Curd won Sativa, while Meed House / Blue Magoo received Highest THC. The separate labels make the point directly: winning a category and recording the highest THC are different achievements. Spannabis Champions Cup · results 2026

Reading one result: Roswell 47
The archived Emerald Cup 2024 table lists Decibel Gardens / Roswell 47 first in Indoor Flower and separately lists Indoor Flower Breeder’s Cup with the same pair. Preserve those as two awards rather than collapsing them into one ambiguous claim. The record also does not establish that another producer’s Roswell 47, or another batch, matches the entered specimen. Emerald Cup · 2024 official results, archived
When writing or sharing an award, retain the series, edition, category, placement, entrant and product name. If the record supplies no batch identifier, say so. Reading a lab report matched to the specimen addresses questions an award does not answer; understanding cultivar labels and genetics separates a market name from plant identity.
Phuket: a Thai example with results and judging notes
The Phuket Cannabis Association describes its first Cup as a place for industry participants to meet, share knowledge and support one another. Its report includes winners and explains blind testing in which judges saw sample numbers instead of farm or cultivar names. This illustrates the value of an event record beyond trophy photographs. The published criteria belong to that event, not to a universal Thai standard. สมาคมกัญชาภูเก็ต · The 1st Phuket Cannabis Cup
One result on that page is Best Indoor Hybrid: Wonder Farm — Dream Factory. The judging description covers appearance, terpene profile, flavour and experienced effects. The reader can recover an entrant, product, category and assessment dimensions together. The event year should not be guessed from the website’s footer copyright. สมาคมกัญชาภูเก็ต · The 1st Phuket Cannabis Cup

Meaningful awards have boundaries
Competitions can build a shared vocabulary, connect practitioners and make selected differences discussable. Quality still has several dimensions: judges’ preferences, a specimen’s composition, safety and clinical efficacy are not the same question. One trophy cannot replace every kind of evidence or determine legal rights of possession and cross-border transport. Nor should limited documentation be replaced by an accusation that a particular event was unfair.
For BUDS THAILAND, a strong Thai industry needs both recognition for skilled people and records open to scrutiny. The rarity-and-awards chapter of our cannabis history supplies wider market context; our medical-cannabis histories examine how a famous name relates to evidence. Reading an award completely lets us appreciate the craft more precisely, without asking the trophy to prove things it never measured.
